Gathering communities one celebration at a time...

Celebrating Single Mothers

A Holiday Mommy Spa and Party at EPAmade

This holiday season join us in celebrating single mothers in East Palo Alto. Our hope is to give these mothers a chance to take a break from taking care of their family and daily struggles, relax, recharge and celebrate the holiday season. Together with EPAMade, we are planning a couple of hours of pampering and festivities where they can experience some respite and refreshments. We will have various stations where they can choose to get a massage, facial, decorate cookies, write a holiday card and enjoy a great meal. There will be a children's corner where volunteers will engage the children with crafts and other activities. There will be a gift table where kids can choose a book, stuffed animals or pajamas to take home, and small gifts for the mothers as well.

How do we make this happen? This is where you, volunteers could come to help and show them that you care. We are looking for massage therapist to provide chair massages, nail artist, and henna artist. You can also donate cookies, crafts, books, pajamas, stuffed animals, and gift bag of gift card and other gifts for the mothers (scarf, socks, gloves etc.). Another option is to make a monetary donation to cover food, and flowers for the event. Select Donate or Volunteer Sign Up button to donate gifts or money, or sign up to volunteer,. Your donation is tax deductible under EPAmade, a program under Levmade, Inc. a 501(c)(3) non profit organization.

Our Story

Our name is inspired by a beautiful Amish quilt pattern called Broken Dishes. Amish quilts are usually made by a group of women in a place where they gather as a community. Each block is uniquely made and stitched together to become one beautiful creation.

Broken Dishes sees beauty in imperfection. Our mission is to gather people from different walks of life through celebrations and beautiful meals, where each person can share their unique story, meet new friends and form tighter communities.

Broken Dishes plans to create more community celebrations in the Bay Area Peninsula! Send us ideas for future event! Sign up for our newsletter for more information.

Celebrating Grandmothers

A Mother's Day Luncheon at AACI

On May 11, 2015 Broken Dishes and The Shoebox Project hosted a festive Mother's Day luncheon for culturally isolated and low income Asian seniors at the AACI community center. We set up beautiful table settings, prepared wonderful dishes and surprised the grandmothers with gifts. On top of it children from Ventana School came to present flowers, sang several songs and escorted them to the table. A talented 11 year old harpist performed beautiful background music as the seniors enjoyed their meals. Volunteers prepared meals and came to serve, C'est Delectable donated delicious macarons, various people donated money to support the meals and even the media came to cover our event. It was a heart warming and joyous occasion of community coming together to support and celebrate each other. Thank you to all who participated.
